Went to the Swallows Parade for the first time this year with some of my husband’s friends! I’m gonna be very honest with you—the parade was cute, especially with the kids participating—but as a person of color, I’ve almost never felt any good energy from San Juan Capistrano. I only had my charter school there as a kid. I’ve also gone there multiple times when looking for wedding venues, and showing the area off to my in-laws when they’re in town. Is it charming? Yes—but in the same way that any mission/colonized town is. If anything, I will say that the Swallows Parade made me appreciate a lot more of the Latino culture that is part of the history of San Juan Capistrano. But there’s also a certain amount of disrespect and uncomfortableness from others participating in the event. How uncomfortable do you think the little kids in the parade feel when they see a group of MAGA Trump people cheering them on? I didn’t grow up as a kid during this time, but I know that would’ve sent fear straight through me. Racists never comprehend or understand that just because they have a smile on their face—and in my case, say “You look so pretty”—that I can still tell from the energy, the tone, the eyes. That smile doesn’t fool anyone. But I’d love to hear from you—especially if you’re a person of color who lives in the Orange County area, has participated in this event, or has spent any time in San Juan Capistrano. What has your experience been like? #lyltokyo #fyp #orangecounty
