Old-Fashioned Red Velvet Cake! ♥️ Screenshot recipe at the end! This is my great-grandma, Elizabeth’s recipe! My mom, @shaunaleed just shared a step-by-step reel on her page! It takes a little time, but so so worth it, and a special dessert we only make during Christmas-time! 🎄 Cake Ingredients: 1/2 cup shortening 1 1/2 cup sugar 2 eggs 2 1/4 cups flour 1 cup buttermilk 2 tablespoons cocoa powder 2 oz red food coloring 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon soda 1 tablespoon vinegar 1 tsp vanilla Directions: 1. Cream together shortening, sugar, and eggs. 2. Add sifted flour, alternatively, with buttermilk. 3. Make a paste with food coloring, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt. Add to mixture. 4. Combine soda + vinegar, and add to the batter. 5. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. (I heavily spray my cake pans so it comes out easier when assembling.) Icing Ingredients: 5 tablespoons flour 1 cup milk 1 cup butter 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla Dash of salt Directions: 1. In a saucepan, cook flour and milk until smooth and thick. Let cool completely. (It needs to be thick) 2. With a mixer, cream together butter and sugar. Add vanilla and salt. 3. Add cooled mixture to butter mixture. Beat together.
