So part 3 is only kind of loosely based on Craven’s original script. Wes Craven only returns for New Nightmare. He had nothing to do with 4 5 or 6

The reason why the second one wasn't well received was because the story didn't really expand in that one. it was basically just a rehash of what we saw in the first one and the first one was better. The third one the story opened up in a huge way. it introduced Freddie's mom and backstory whole news. interesting slew of kids that were in a psych ward and they could control their powers in their dreams. it was an excellent script for a horror film
