for those of you who are trying to get a seat in our upcoming cohorts including the Musician basic elective (where we talk about this kind of stuff) please keep reaching out to me. I’ve been away and I am behind on returning calls. I promise I will get to you. The question of how many musical keys are there is really largely an academic one. this is a bit of a rabbit hole, but in case you’re interested… First of all, we are talking about the 12 note equal temperament scale. But from there, we start dealing with all sorts of questions that make things a lot more complicated than perhaps they need to be. if we stick with the number 12, we get a simple answer that is capable of guiding us through most of our harmonic questions. We often hear the number 30 and that’s because there are 15 key signatures commonly found in printed music. Those are the engravable ones and even those include a few duplicates because of enharmonic equivalent keys using flats and sharps. There are 15 of those and we arrive at the number 30 because each has a major and a minor mode. But there are actually 12 modes for each key, so the number should be a lot larger. There are also other common keys like the harmonic minor that don’t fit squarely into any of those modes. But once you start including things like double sharp keys, it becomes clear that you are going to end up with triple sharps. And if you have triple sharps, I guess pretty soon you will have quadruple sharps. It never ends. So my answer: 12. #M#MusicTheoryScales #M#MusicProduction
