Not my typical content, but a wee appreciation post for Bernard Hill, who passed away today, 5th of May 2024. About a year ago, I took my oldest Wee Tartan Viking to a SciFi Con in Edinburgh. First thing we spotted was a photo booth where they could generate a really cool background behind you. Obviously, Wee Tartan wanted some kind of Spiderman backdrop. There was no queue, but there was someone standing beside some staff members getting their photo taken. As one of them moved, I realised it was Bernard Hill, King Theoden himself holding Theoden's sword! I didn't want to bother him, so patiently waited at the door till it looked like they were finished. As they started to leave, Bernard looked at us and asked if we were there for a photo. I said

I said "we're actually here for a Spiderman backdrop for this one (gesturing to my son) but I wouldn't say no! He walked us back in, and the photographer and tech guys got set up for the shot. He took time to chat with Wee Tartan, asking him about what he liked and what he wanted to see at the convention. I explained that this man was a king! Wee Tartan's eyes widened at this! Now, if you weren't aware from a lot of my music choice, I'm a big Lord of the Rings fan, but Wee Tartan has no idea what it is. So when Bernard asked us what pose we wanted to do, Wee Tartan raised his hand to sling a web. Bernard smiled and did the same thing. So, the three of us stood there, ready to shoot webs in the Kingdom of Rohan, creating one of the weirdest, but favourite photos I have.
