This day will live rent free in my head for a long time to come. This early March day had one of the most brilliant and unique radar evolutions on the High Plains I've seen. This cell produced three tornadoes in rapid succession as it interacted with and came off of the caprock escarpment in the Texas Panhandle SE of Amarillo. A few things to note: 👉 1. Donut Hole + Velocity Gradient = Tornado Alert! On radar, the “donut hole” in reflectivity (left panel) is a classic sign of a tornado, surrounded by high reflectivity. Pair that with a tight couplet on velocity (right panel)—a sharp gradient of inbound and outbound winds—and you’ve got a likely tornado in progress. 👉 2. Supercell Evolution = What’s Next? A rapidly cycling supercell often creates new tornadoes just east of the ongoing one. 🌪️➡️ Keep an eye on how the storm shifts—velocity couplets and reflectivity changes can reveal where the next tornado is forming. 📡 Mastering the evolution of a supercell helps you stay ahead of the storm’s dangerous game, especially when they rapidly cycle like this one did. 🎯 👉 3. Rain-Wrapped Tornadoes = Hidden Danger! Dense reflectivity around tornadoes means rain-wrapped trouble. 🌧️🌪️ These tornadoes are concealed in heavy rain, making them almost impossible to see. For storm chasers, this is a BIG hazard—this is one of the few times that I will say don’t rely on your eyes alone; trust the radar (and the extensive knowledge of supercell behavior) to keep you safe! #science#nature#TornadoScience#supercell#texas#weatherradar #radar
