The before and after photographs of my last kiln load of work, pots in four different glazes, together with an odd assortment of refires on the lowest layer. You’ll also notice a noticeable change in approach regarding some pots here, on the bottom shelf there’s a stack of red spotted pots, these are bowls made with bronze firings wedged liberally into them. They’re too spotty, they work as one-off objects perhaps but the spottiness is overwhelming and distracts from the simplicity my work otherwise has. Then, on the shelves above you’ll see more red dots, these are from pieces of metal sprinkled very sparingly over a much larger block of clay that’s then kneaded up. In this instance these dots act as beauty spots, creating tiny visual treats on each vessel or giving them a ‘face’, an obvious direction for displaying them in the future.

Refires go on the bottom by the way as it tends to fire cooler, which means my usual crackle glazes don’t fire optimally there. You can see that in the bowl in the very middle on the prop, once fired it obtains a rather matte surface as opposed to the shiny quality I’m after.

The three spikes in a row you see are pyrometric cones. These melt and bend as the kiln heats up and by watching them through spy-holes in the door I can judge when it’s time to end the firing.

Lastly, yes, the pots shrink, they’ve been shrinking this entire time in fact, from the moment they were thrown to when they’re glazed fired, like this, yet the most notable change happens here. This clay body shrinks about 12% from when soft out of the bag to the finished, reduction fired objects you see here.
