I’m Chinese! And I think the “I understand what you are talking about”is kinda equal to “your pronunciation is great “cuz the tones sometimes are confusing to ppl who are leaning Chinese so its a subtle way of complimenting

for me it was the ppl in the countryside that just talk to me like a normal person and ppl in seoul that try to use me as their duolingo. hasn't happened in a while tho, thankfully 😂😂

from what I've noticed, at least, if ur Chinese level is 你好，这是什么？then ppl will say "omg, ur Chinese is so good🥰" but if ur Chinese is better, they'll say "I acc understand u"😅

One of the most annoying things when I was in Korea was when Koreans would talk to me who knew no Korean instead of my friends who were in Korean 6 because they assumed I spoke it.
