The Tetley in its current form is to close 😮 and is 'no longer part' of plans for Aire Park in Leeds. The charity that runs the space has announced its lease is coming to an end - and we now know there are no plans to renew it as owners Vastint UK plan to do their own refurb of the former Tetley brewery site. The building sits on the major upcoming development 'Aire Park', which when complete will be the largest new city centre park in the UK - surrounded by new offices, homes and retail space. The site's developers took ownership of the building from Carlsberg midway through a 10 year 'no cost' lease of the building to Project Space Leeds - the charity that runs @The Tetley. That lease came to an end last year, with Vastint UK renewing it for free until March next year. Vastint says it's had 'regular conversations' about plans to refurbish the building to ensure it can continue its role as a focal point for community activities - though it's expected to become a 'mixed-use' building with new retail, office and leisure opportunities alongside public amenities.  The Tetley has put on 56 exhibitions over the last ten years - as well as conferences, weddings, and a number of signature events bringing cultural projects to communities in South Leeds in particular. It's confirmed today that the on-site exhibition programme will end on 22nd October, and The Tetley Bar & Kitchen will close then too. The Tetley will then fully close to the public on 17th December with Project Space Leeds moving to a new home in 2024.  In a statement The Tetley / PSL told us: 'Our ten year lease is coming to an end in March 2024 and The Tetley contemporary art gallery is no longer part of the long term plans for Aire Park. ‘It’s been a privilege to be based in this iconic building in Leeds for the last ten years. We’re so proud of everything we’ve achieved here. We fulfil a vital role for the visual arts, and for families and young people in Leeds, and are looking forward to continuing our important work in the city.' Developers Vastint UK said: 'PSL’s initial lease expired in November 2022 and we actively worked with them to offer our support including a free lease extension until March 2024. They have since informed us of their decision to leave in December 2023. Moving forward, we plan to deliver the necessary repairs and modernisation in order to secure the longevity of the building, whilst retaining the original historic features. During these works the building will be uninhabitable and therefore will be closed to the public. Vastint UK’s proposals for the building will ensure it continues to offer public amenities for both residents and visitors to Leeds to enjoy once it reopens.' Leeds City Council has commented too, saying: 'Project Space Leeds should be congratulated on everything they have achieved at the Tetley – it has been a privilege for the council to be able to support their work as one of the first cultural anchors of the South Bank. We look forward to continuing that support as they forge ahead with their ongoing contributions to the cultural life of Leeds.' #Leeds #LeedsCityCentre #development #thingstodoinleeds #artgallery #artsandculture
