Porshia Ciutti says her body has betrayed her. The 24-year-old says her stomach stopped processing food after she contracted COVID-19 in 2021. The infection sent her to hospital and led to a three-month stay, during which doctors struggled to keep her alive with feeding tubes. After trying standard treatments like dietary and lifestyle changes, feeding tubes and Botox injections, Ciutti now survives on an intravenous tube that is connected to her heart. Every day for 16 hours, she’s attached to her total parenteral nutrition (TPN) machine, which pumps a special liquid formula to give her the nutrients she needs, while bypassing the gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Keith McIntosh, a gastroenterologist based in London, Ont., who is not Ciutti’s doctor, said while gastroparesis isn’t uncommon, the severity of her case (in which a TPN machine is required) is rare. He said most cases of gastroparesis are idiopathic, meaning there isn’t any identifiable underlying disorder that’s causing the symptoms. The second most common cases occur in conjunction with diabetes. McIntosh confirmed gastroparesis can also be caused by a viral infection, and said he wasn’t surprised to hear Ciutti started experiencing problems after contracting COVID-19. McIntosh said that some research over the pandemic has suggested that gastroparesis could be a post-viral effect of COVID-19, He also stressed research on the link between the virus and gastroparesis is in its early stages. So far, the specialists Ciutti has seen and McIntosh agree that if an alternative treatment isn’t found, she won’t be able to survive on TPN past age 30. A previous post with this story stated that Porshia Ciutti’s stomach doesn’t empty fast enough due to gastroparesis. In fact, her stomach doesn’t empty its contents at all. The incorrect post has been removed. #Gastroparesis #ViralInfection #Health #Nutrition #Canada #CBC #CBCNews
