Interviewer: “Why did you leave your last role without another offer lined up?” The answer is NOT to start listing everything you hated about your previous company. You want your answer to sound intentional, commercially aware and focused on where your career is going next. Here are 3 stronger ways to answer it: 1️⃣ The scope of the role changed “The scope of my previous role had shifted slightly from the direction I wanted to take my career long term. I’d learnt a lot in the position, but I realised I wanted my next move to be much more commercially focused, with clearer progression and greater exposure to revenue-generating responsibilities. Rather than moving into another role for the sake of it, I decided to be intentional about finding the right opportunity.” This works REALLY well if you’re trying to move into tech sales. 2️⃣ You wanted to make a deliberate career pivot “I’d reached a point where I knew I wanted to move into a more commercial career path. I was particularly interested in tech sales because it combines communication, problem solving, relationship building and measurable performance. I decided to take some time out to properly understand the industry, develop the relevant skills and be selective about the companies I applied to.” Even better if you can then add: “During that time, I invested in training to understand the fundamentals of an SDR role, prospecting, cold outreach, CRM systems and the wider sales process, so I could enter the industry properly prepared.” 3️⃣ You’d outgrown the progression available “I was grateful for what I learnt in my previous position, but I’d reached a point where the progression available no longer aligned with what I wanted from my career. I’m ambitious, I enjoy working towards measurable goals and I wanted to move into an environment where performance can directly impact both progression and earning potential. That’s what ultimately attracted me to tech sales.” The key is that you’re not running away from your old job. You’re moving towards something more aligned. That distinction makes you sound far more confident in an interview. And if you’re currently trying to move from a traditional corporate role into tech sales, don’t assume your previous experience is irrelevant. Your communication, stakeholder management, organisation, resilience, customer experience and commercial skills can all be highly transferable — you just need to know how to position them. Comment TECH if you want to learn how to break into tech sales in the UK. #TechSales #CareerChange #InterviewTips #SalesCareers #UKJobs
