One of the most amazing parts of being able to bring Jude & Liam back to Ethiopia has been the opportunity to learn some of the cultural traditions of their birth country. So thankful that this sweet woman, Genet, was so kind to teach us all to make injera from her home in Gunchire. She has the sweetest smile and the gentlest spirit, and was so patient with each of us as we tried our best to create this staple of Ethiopian life. Genet has 7 kids, but has had to send a few of them away to live because she simply couldn’t afford to care for them under her current conditions. She spends the days with her fire and clay pan working to bake injera to sell at the market and is very, very good at her craft. But because of her lack of resources, she can’t expand her business enough to have her family all together, which is utterly heartbreaking. It was such an honor to be able to visit her home and share such a tender moment with her and get to tell her that through Help One Now family business empowerment program, she will have everything she needs to be able to grow her business and truly expand in such a way that will transform not only her family, but the entire community. She will be able to hire employees which creates jobs in her village and breaks the cycle of poverty. She will be able to move from selling in the market to distributing at a much larger scale and pouring back into her local economy. But above all that, Genet will be able to bring her children back home and all be reunified together again. No more having to choose between keeping her children or feeding her children. That’s the beauty of family empowerment. It’s not a hand out. It’s a hand up. Together we build. Genet is being empowered so that her family can stay together. And she will empower other families to stay together. The ripple effect of this kind of love is exponential. We have seen it work over and over again through stories like Genet’s this week. Help One Now has helped to empower over 800 families in Ethiopia over the last decade and in a village like Gunchire where the orphan crisis was beyond unmanageable - now there are no more orphans. They’ve all been reunified with their families or adopted by families who were able to step up and give them a forever home locally through domestic adoption. We are working to empower 100 families just like Genet’s this week and we are inviting you to join us in that work! We would be honored if you would go to http://helponenow.org/THEMILLERFAM and give to help 100 families stay together. Can’t wait to take you all along on the rest of our adventure here in Ethiopia! #Ethiopia #EthiopianAdoption #HeritageTrip #Injera
