It is not crazy to assume that pre-industrial societies allowed much more personal freedom than modern society does. It was the industrial revolution that made people dependant on vast institutions (e.g corporations, governments and other technological infrastructure), which impose rules and shape human behaviour. In the past, people had more freedom precisely because life was steered by cooperation in families and small communities, not technological systems and bureaucracies. As technology becomes more and more complex, societies must become increasingly organized and regulated. This leads to the erosion of autonomy because it is human behaviour that must be modified to fit the needs of the system, not vice versa. The technological-system is only obedient to technical necessity, it is an autonomous system with its own internal logic.
