German here, notation we learn 7x+2=4x+8 |-2 7x=4x+6 |-4x 3x=6 |:3 X=2

systems, nice to be exposed to both, like the American subtraction, it's easier on the mind, just fo it to both sides so you less likely to forget a step.

I'm from Romania and adding/subtracting/etc from both sides is pretty common here along with the other way. It's just that we do a vertical line at the end of the equasion and then we write +2
