Because the vast majority of patients reported no recent international travel, health officials confirm these strains are spreading natively within the U.S.. Symptoms and Complications Shigella is highly contagious; exposure to as few as 10 organisms can trigger severe illness. Common symptoms include: • Severe diarrhea (often containing blood or mucus) • Stomach cramps and acute abdominal pain • Fever and vomiting • Dehydration While mild cases usually resolve on their own with oral rehydration, severe or XDR cases can lead to serious complications like dysentery, bloodstream infections, seizures, or hospitalization. People with compromised immune systems, including individuals living with HIV, face the highest risk of life-threatening illness. Prevention and Safety Measures Because there is currently no widely available vaccine against Shigella, health agencies like the CDC urge the following preventive practices: • Practice Strict Hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before eating, preparing food, and both before and after sexual activity. • Pause Sexual Activity: Anyone experiencing diarrhea should completely avoid sexual contact. • Post-Recovery Caution: Because the bacteria can continue to shed in stool after illness passes, individuals should avoid sexual activity—particularly any contact involving the anus—for at least two weeks after their symptoms completely disappear.
