“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (1984) 🥳 40 Year Anniversary! US Release: 1987 Director: Hayao Miyazaki Score: 8/10 “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” is Miyazaki’s second theatrical feature film. And it was so widely successful that it paved the way for the founding of Studio Ghibli. The film follows Nausicaä a princess who lives in a vast and dangerous world with toxic plant life and massive insects. Nausicaä’s troubles begin when an opposing clan’s airship mysteriously arrives in their valley in the dead of night. As expected from Miyazaki, the film is beautiful. You can have good hand-drawn animation and good 3D animation, but the knowledge that animators sat down and drew out these scenes frame by frame really increases the watching experience. The story delves into issues regarding the treatment of the environment and nature. And it does it in a subtle yet effective way. Through the character of Nausicaä we get a message of understanding above all. Unlike most of the characters around her she chooses to understand and act on that impulse over anything. Thought she was a very strong character, and I loved her motivations. I think this is one of Miyazaki’s less talked films, and it’s one of his best. So I would highly recommend it! If you’re a Studio Ghibli fan you will definitely love this film!
