The Greenhouse gas effect only takes into account radiation, not conduction or convection. CONDUCTION: The argument that the addition of another 100 parts per million of CO2 molecules into the atmosphere can heat the other million molecules in the atmosphere is just plain wrong. 100 parts per million is one part per 10,000. For one molecule to heat 10,000 others by one degree, assuming the same weight would require that one molecule to be 10,000 degrees. Admittedly CO2 is 1.5 times heavier that the weighted average of nitrogen and oxygen but that still means the CO2 molecule would need to be 6,600 degrees which is hotter than the sun. This is impossible. CONVECTION: Unlike solids, gases have no fixed volume. It is wrong to compare gas in the atmosphere to a gas enclosed inside a fixed solid object like a greenhouse. That’s because the greenhouse can stop the gas I.e. water vapor from rising. CO2 on the other hand will continue to rise the hotter it gets. As it rises it will eventually cool. The evidence for this can be seen by the difference in heights of the troposphere at the equator which is 16kms high while at the poles it is only 6kms high. Long story short heat isn’t trapped, it rises. RADIATION: Einstein himself says radiation is insignificant compared to other forms of heat transfer. It’s true CO2 does absorb photons but it absorbs incoming photons that are five times more energetic than the outgoing photons it absorbs (and emits). So just like water vapor, CO2 has a cooling effect on the atmosphere in terms of radiation. The addition of any molecules in the atmosphere will increase the temperature based on the ideal gas law.
