The Northeast/Mid-Atlatlantic cities are older so they’ll have more neighborhoods that pre-date cars. Thus, closer together. More walkable, etc.

New England towns/cities were built to be navigated on foot or on horseback, which is why the streets are often small and confusing (driving in Boston is the worst experience you’ll ever have)
