In my Country are mandatory,fines are high.You loose your registration of the car.If you crash during winter and you don't have winter tires you lose your insurance cover as well.

they aren't mandatory, but you'll fail provincial safety inspection if they're not on your car during winter.

Remember to get the right kind of winter tire too. Ice tires suck in fresh/loose snow Snow/ATs suffer on ice. Studs bridge the gap but are simultaneously a poor and expensive substitute.
