The Four Yogas of Mahamudra provide a structured progression of meditative development, leading from focused attention to the culmination of non-dual awareness and complete liberation. These teachings come from the Kagyu lineage but are accessible to anyone interested in deepening their practice, regardless of prior experience. Each stage offers tools for calming the mind, overcoming habitual patterns, and realizing innate wisdom. The Four Yogas are: One-Pointedness (Tibetan: བདུད་རྩལ): This is the initial stage where the mind is trained to focus single-pointedly on a meditation object. The goal is to develop concentration and stability of mind, free from distractions. Non-Conceptuality (Tibetan: རྣམ་པ་ལྷུན་གྲུབ།): Once concentration is achieved, the practitioner moves to the second yoga, where the mind is freed from conceptual thoughts and discursive thinking. The practitioner begins to experience the mind as clear and luminous, beyond the habitual patterns of conceptualizing. One-Taste (Tibetan: རིག་གཉིས་མཐུན་མོ།): In this stage, the practitioner realizes that all experiences—whether good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant—have the same nature. Everything is seen as a manifestation of mind, and distinctions between subject and object begin to dissolve. Non-Meditation (Tibetan: མི་བསྒོམ་གཤེགས་མ།): In the final yoga, the distinction between meditation and post-meditation dissolves. The practitioner rests in the natural, uncontrived state of awareness without effort. The mind is completely free and spontaneous, experiencing the ultimate nature of reality directly. These Four Yogas lead to the realization of Mahamudra, where the practitioner directly experiences the true nature of the mind, which is empty, luminous, and beyond conceptual limitations.
