I told my wife not to call maintenance for this very reason and she did anyways. turns out our breaker box was shorting out and we were about to have an electrical fire glad she called

Its the auxiliary heat strips burning off dust. Solution is to change air filter & clean the first couple feet of ducts with a static duster.

Ours did that randomly last winter after the heat had been used for a few months. Except in our situation the smoke detectors went off and the whole house smelled like smoke.
