@fishlikemike: Finally caught one! After fishing for 5 days with no bites I drove 300 miles to a different stretch of river and we crushed them! Although this isn’t the 10ft+ river monster I was after it is still a great bucket list fish. After holding a sturgeon this size I can only imagine how difficult holding a 10 footer must be. For those that don’t know the spiny scales on these fish are razor sharp and if handled incorrectly, a thrashing sturgeon can leave you with a deep cut requiring stitches! These fish are prehistoric, it’s like holding a living dinosaur. The earliest sturgeon fossils date back to the Late Cretaceous period, around 174–201 million years ago! These fish live anywhere from 50 to 100 years old, although someone argue that they can live even older! Depending on the species, sturgeon can grow to be very large, with some reaching lengths of over 20 feet and weighing more than 1,500 pounds! The largest sturgeon on record was a beluga female captured in the Volga Delta in 1827, measuring 23 ft 7 in long and weighing 3,463 lb. In the last 25 years anything over 11/12ft is considered a very rare trophy fish. Makes you wonder how many giants are still swimming around out there!
