@the.tiser: We asked Americans what they think about compulsory voting in Australia... #uselection #kamalaharris #donaldtrump #unitedstates #election #australia #compulsoryvoting
Did you tell them about the fine they get if they don’t go out and vote

We also vote on a Saturday and the last few elections I’ve had to stand in line for a combined time of about 2 minutes.

The thing is, people here in Australia are more politically literate because you have to know what’s going on to cast your vote. A donkey/inappropriate/vandalised vote isn’t counted.

You dont even have to fill in the form, you can just show up, get your name ticked off and walk away. And if you dont, just pay $25 aud. If you dont vote you are putting everyone at a disadvantage

I find however, having compulsory voting means the average Australian voter IS more informed - as if you HAVE to vote, why not at least read about who to vote for

Isabelle :
The importance of compulsory voting is that it compels the government to make voting as accessible as possible for everyone! It’s less about individual obligation and more about protecting the rights of the many.

If the government can force a woman to carried a fetus to term against her will and sometimes against her health why can't it force all people including men to enter a voting booth?

We DO have a choice if we vote or not. We can either vote, or draw a dick and balls on the ballot, but compulsory voting ensures no one is suppressed due to voting accessibility. Voting is very accessible here.
