He becomes just the second defeated president to win back the White House after Grover Cleveland, who did so in 1892. Mr. Trump largely campaigned on immigration and economic issues, railing against the Biden–Harris administration for its border policies and the soaring cost of goods and services. His election victory became apparent early Wednesday morning after he claimed the crucial battlegrounds of Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina, effectively closing off any remaining pathway for Vice President Kamala Harris. Mr. Trump was all but written off as a politically viable candidate after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, which stemmed from his false claims of fraud in the 2020 election. He launched his third campaign for the Oval Office shortly after the 2022 midterms and was never in jeopardy of losing the GOP nomination despite being challenged by his former vice president, Mike Pence, and former U.N. ambassador, Nikki Haley, as well as the popular governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis. His lengthy campaign played out against the backdrop of numerous legal challenges, and he was ultimately found guilty in New York on 34 felony counts related to his concealment of hush money payments. Mr. Trump also faces two separate federal indictments brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith related to his involvement in the Jan. 6 attack and alleged mishandling of classified documents. Those criminal cases will be stopped in their tracks once Mr. Trump assumes the Oval Office. He survived two attempts on his life during the campaign, including at his July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in which a gunman’s bullet grazed his ear. He also faced two general election opponents, with Vice President Harris taking over the Democratic nomination after President Biden decided to withdraw from the race with just over 100 days until the election.
