Those are not actually Phillip head screws they are the little square head bit.

if you use a #2 spare bit on the screws they usually get the job done

I'd rather wreck my 11mm socket than the inherited 7/16ths I got from grandpa, those little lines on the bottom are where the chrome peels off first and where cracks begin.

PZ2 is the bit that I find works the best for those peterbilt screws. It’s a combo square/philips bit.

I usually dig the heads out with a pick, and do exactly what you did. Most of what I work on still has wood floors too, so I go back with drywall screws and washers...
