Many people tell me that whenever they see my ads or posts they immediately start doing kegels. (My plan is working 😉) One of the more popular cues that helps peole visualize what muscles to activate is ‘imagine sipping a smoothie through a straw with your vagina’. I bet you are trying it right now aren’t you? To effectively perform a kegel there is a contraction and a lift and a release. Many don’t know about or practice the lift or the release....it is usually all about the ‘squeeze’. The squeeze is important but so is the lift and the release. I argue that the release is actually even more important because it enables the muscles to generate the most power. The other important aspect to kegels is that the pelvic floor works in synergy with the diaphragm. Inhales lengthen the pelvic floor and exhales are where the squeeze and the lift happen. This happens (or should be) all day as we breathe but many things in life can interfere with the synergy...but it can be retrained. I use the term core breathing because the pelvic floor is part of the core AND it works with the breath. Try this - sit down or lie down. Ensure there is a gentle curve in your low back and that your pubic joint and hip bones are in the same plane. Inhale and expand the ribs, allow the belly to inflate and imagine blossiming your vulva. Now exhale, and imagine sipping a smoothie through a straw with your vagina. Squeeze the top of the straw and draw upwards. Then inhale and let it go. Once you have the hang of this (it takes some time and the majority of people in my community say it feels opposite to what they have been doing) you will coordinate the core breath into moves like push ups and bridges and squats and bicep curls. Whole body pelvic floor exercise is definitely trending!
