I never actually assumed it was free, but something mundane we didn't need to be shown. There are other simplifications/shortcuts in the movie, too, which made me not even worry about the cost or payment plan.

they do always call it an "experiment" and the fact that there are more boxes and A LOT more space to install more boxes if business goes well shows that there has been others before (probably dead by now) and that they do not intend to stop anytime soon
