But here’s the truth: there’s no such thing as a perfect parent. We’re all just doing our best. Our parents, God bless them, didn’t leave us a manual. There was no transfer of knowledge or best practices. They did what they could with what they knew, and now it’s up to us to work it out. And while it’s tough, it’s also important to remember: Don’t beat yourself up! Go easy on yourself... In the words of Stephen Marche, many parents “love their children to death” but still worry they’ll “screw them up.” It’s real. But here’s the hope: what’s broken can be fixed. Rupture is real, but so is repair. The problem isn’t our children’s behaviour—it’s how their behaviour triggers something inside of us. When we react, it’s often our own emotions and past experiences coming to the surface. By addressing our own triggers first, everything else begins to fall into place. So, to every parent feeling overwhelmed: don’t give up. Start with understanding yourself, and the rest will follow.
