@myordinarytreasure: Lashings of antique marmalade jars!...please visit my Insta - @myordinarytreasure for the details and updates on my river finds. *** It's unusual to find antique printed wares of any variety, so I was twice as chuffed with this mighty marmalade duo found on my last river wade. Keiller's is a Scottish marmalade brand that is believed to be the first commercially produced marmalade in Great Britain. The story goes that in the 18th century, James Keiller bought a cargo of Seville oranges from a Spanish ship that had been delayed by a storm. The oranges were past their prime, but Keiller's mother, Janet, was able to make a large quantity of marmalade from them. The marmalade was a success, and the Keillers soon opened a factory to produce it on a larger scale. Keiller's marmalade became a hugely popular brand in the 19th century, and it is still in business today. Sarah Cooper, the wife of a grocer in Oxford, created the original recipe for Cooper's marmalade in 1874. Initially sold to students and dons at the university, its popularity grew rapidly, leading to the establishment of a factory in Oxford in 1903. A decade later, a tin of Frank Cooper's marmalade was taken on Captain Robert Falcon Scott's expedition to Antarctica, where it was found buried in the ice many years later. Today, Frank Cooper's marmalade remains a beloved brand, known for its distinctively tangy taste and rich heritage. #riverfinds #mudlarking #treasurehunting #historyhunting #happyplace #relaxing
