@jeanne_retired: Replying to @ljanx I agree, that most 401ks, especially the larger plans have institutional share classes and the lower expense ratios than the retail funds offered in IRAs. Ive keept my assests in my 401k. #retirement #retireearly #401k #ira #retirementplanning #retiree #retired #genx #boomer @user1307215835567 @lindacarney315

Currently interviewing financial advisor, he will be taking 1% of earnings, this good or bad? 1/4% 4 times a year

The S&P 500 index fund in my 401k has an expense ratio of 0.01%. Awesome rate but there are very few options for funds.

Move yearly portions, say 20%, to a Roth IRA which become taxable, but keeps your tax rate lower than large transfer.

For Vanguard and Fidelity index funds though you're taking 2 or 3 basis points difference top. This wouldn't go into my decision tree with much weight

But if you want to do a Roth conversion, you are probably better to leave it in a 401(k) rather than roll it over to an IRA due to the pro rata rule.

Great point, lower fees matter. if it’s a large corporation they usually have very good options that work. Also, if it’s a lot of money your financial advisor is going to want a piece of those fees.

my 401k is limited to certain funds, but if I move to an IRA, I can invest in all the funds, correct?

I worked for a huge bank most of my career. I noticed the fees were much lower than anything else I can get so I kept it there. Thanks for explaining why!

Probably not what many do but I put all my $ in gov t bonds (in my 401k) would it make sense to move the money to a IRA and do the same thing? I don’t want to lose any money.
