It has cradled creatures like these for centuries, watched them grow or be swallowed whole. Their mother moves through the undergrowth like something half-formed from shadow and sinew, hunger wrapped in fur, patience honed by necessity. She has fought for her life more times than she can count, and she will fight again. If she fails, the forest will take them back—silently, indifferently. But if she prevails, these helpless whelps will become something else. They will be the weight behind breaking branches, the slow thunder of paws pressing into damp earth. They will learn the wind’s language, the river’s winding veins, the difference between shelter and peril. For now, they are trembling bundles of instinct, waiting for the world to decide their fate. But soon, their backs will thicken with muscle, their eyes sharpen with the wisdom of claw and hunger. The forest offers no kindness, only the chance to endure. And that will be enough.
