It might even be simpler then all of that, it's probably just if the perception of the economy is good. when you're in power, you win. if not, you lose.

Y’know, in the uk, (Yes I know we’re a lot smaller so it doesn’t take as long), no area announces any votes till they’re all counted. Feels like that would solve a few problems here.
