Who gets the last light? The cat sits on the window edge outside, steeping in the final amber sun like a dethroned monarch who kept precisely one province. Below, the Romanian village yard tumbles into evening with magnificent disregard for decorum. Dogs patrol imaginary frontiers like customs officers at a border nobody recognizes. Chickens interrogate the soil like detectives convinced the earth is hiding evidence. Ducks waddle past with the pomposity of diplomats carrying documents of no consequence. Nobody poses. Nobody needs applause. Then the larger characters arrive. A cow chews beneath the fading sky with the composure of an ancient philosopher who has heard every human argument and found most tedious. Sheep gather like fragments of weather stranded behind a fence. The pig excavates mud like an alchemist expecting gold beneath the trough, while goats scale improbable ledges like furry heretics escaping gravity’s jurisdiction. Across rural Romania, these animals were never countryside ornaments. They meant milk, eggs, wool, meat, protection and livelihood. The yard wasn’t scenery. It was pantry, workplace, economy and occasional bedlam. Perhaps that’s what makes these places so disarming. Life hasn’t been sterilized into something polite. It smells of hay, warm dust, feathers, manure and supper drifting from a kitchen window. A rooster declares war on silence. A dog collapses beneath a cart as though exhausted by capitalism. Somewhere a goat is committing an offense nobody has written a law for. And the cat remains incandescent on its sill, possessing nothing but the evening and somehow looking richer than us. We accumulate things to prove we’ve lived; these creatures simply inhabit the hour. Who has it figured out? Who would you be here?
