Maybe it was stolen from a tomb, together with the other artifacts. It was buried to hide it, but the thief was never able to retrieve it.

In times of war or civil upheaval it was common for people to hide/bury their wealth so as not to be robbed. Intending to retrieve it later when it was safe to do so, evidently whoever buried it never returned.

Maybe a grave robber got caught & tossed it while being pursued. It is probably a weight for holding down papers,etc.
