How does a Biomedical Scientist help someone with cancer? In a histology lab, we receive tissue samples that are removed from a patient suspected of disease. This tissue then goes through numerous stages: 1️⃣ Fixation - in formalin, to keep the tissue in as life like a state as possible, and to avoid degradation 2️⃣ Dissection - either being put straight into a cassette or being cut to make it smaller 3️⃣ Processing - done overnight to dehydrate the tissue and replace the water with wax 4️⃣ Embedding - the tissue is placed in a particular orientation in a mould, filled with wax with its unique cassette to make a block 5️⃣ Microtomy - thin slices of the tissue are made using a microtome, which are then picked up on a slide 6️⃣ Staining - slides are stained for visualisation. There are specific stains for different diseases, but every sample will get a H&E stain to see the morphology of the tissue 7️⃣ Scanning, quality control and sending out - scanning to create a digital image, quality controlled for staining/cutting errors, then sent out to a pathologist 8️⃣ Post sending out - immunos, extra stains, deeper levels or molecular testing can be done to further investigate the sample This all creates a diagnosis for the patient, and a recommendation of treatment. We can also test for what kind of therapies a patient may benefit from, and also work with clinical trials that patients might be eligible for! #Science #BiomedicalScience #Biomed #BiomedicalScientist #NHS
