Lol the chain is not what hold the ship in place, it attaches the ship to the ANCHOR, WHICH ANCHORES THE SHIP IN PLACE.

anchor doesnt always reach ground anchor is designed to catch underwater currents and chain is not actually attached to ship physiclly otherwise when it reach end would rip hole in ship

it's the anchor that holds the boat in place. the chain makes sure the anchor is pulled over the seabed instead of off the seabed

There’s better visual ways to show it. Like SURFACE AREA. Chain grabs more surface area than the anchor. Holding the ship in place.

2 to 1 2 foot of chain for a foot of water. If you have a 38 foot boat you use 38 feet of chain.

it's called an anchor for a reason and if big ship anchors in shallow water very little chain is paid out so what holds the ships position then ??
