I am actually amazed that they cared for the canaries so much they designed that oxygen chamber to save them. Or maybe it was cheaper to save them, but I'd like to think it was caring.

iirc they made the little contraptions to save them because it severely depressed the miners and some would risk their lives to try bring the bird with them

As a bird owner for many years it warms my heart every time I hear how much they cared for their birds. People can be so callous & cruel to bird owners, asking if we eat our pets when they die.
