I am actually amazed that they cared for the canaries so much they designed that oxygen chamber to save them. Or maybe it was cheaper to save them, but I'd like to think it was caring.

I’d always known canaries had the respect of the miners, but I never knew they had measures to try and save the birds when they went into distress. ❤️

This has changed a lifelong belief of mine which was that they took them down & if they died, everyone would run out. I'm so pleased to know they were valued & cared for. 🥰

iirc they made the little contraptions to save them because it severely depressed the miners and some would risk their lives to try bring the bird with them

As a bird owner for many years it warms my heart every time I hear how much they cared for their birds. People can be so callous & cruel to bird owners, asking if we eat our pets when they die.
