@livjowen: ✨ Let’s talk about when (and when not) to use time-outs with our little ones. This can be a tricky topic, so here’s a quick guide I follow with my toddlers: 💥 When a Time-Out Is Helpful: Time-outs are for moments when a child’s behavior escalates beyond what they can control—like screaming, hitting, or refusing to listen. These are signs that their emotions have taken over, and they need a moment to calm down before they’re able to hear or respond to us. Time-outs provide a safe space for them to reset and regain control of their feelings. 💛 🌱 When No Time-Out Is Needed: On the flip side, when a child is upset but can still listen, express their feelings, or engage in communication, that’s actually a huge win. This is when they’re learning how to work through emotions in real time, and it’s a great opportunity for us to be there, help them process, and validate their feelings without needing a break. ✨ Using time-outs thoughtfully helps kids feel safe and understood. They’re not punishments but tools for calming down. Timeout is showing us that even as adults when we get overwhelmed and overstimulated, we can TAKE A BREAK!

When they can’t communicate that’s when they need time in - child psychology now shows time out does not teach them anything but to hide feelings. ❤️

Hi, pediatric OT here…there is absolutely things you can do to calm them down. Time out during times of dysregulation is only hindering learning and attachment

Thank you for your valuable examples! I see how they work for you and your children. I really like how you use your tone of voice, your eye to eye contact, your use of redirection and choices.

Time out is like when we adult get mad, just need a break than to hurt the other party and take more chance to be controlled by our emotions.

I can see the time out u provide is just "personal space", u are still w/them, they can see u & they know ur there. When they settle, they can Choose what happens next. If u left them alone..⬇️

Yes! Not everyone uses time out as a punishment. In my household it’s used as “a break” and it’s to remove my daughter from the situation to calm down

I think that teaching him strategies other than just the time out space alone would be helpful and something he can use all his life. I.e: deep breaths, counting, or calming materials in time out area
