The vibrant celebration of Khmer New Year, or “Chnam Thmey,” begins, marking a time of joy, renewal, and cultural reflection that spans three sacred days, each with its own unique practices and Khmer names. Day One: Maha Sangkran Maha Sangkran, the first day, welcomes the new spirit of the year. Homes are cleaned and people prepare special offerings of food, fruits, and drinks to receive the new Devata (angel) who will watch over them. It’s a day of reverence and preparation, where Khmers don their finest clothes and visit temples to make offerings. Day Two: Wanabot The second day, Wanabot, is a time of charity and generosity. Families gather to share their blessings with the less fortunate, offering gifts to monks, the elderly, and the needy, symbolizing a heartfelt connection within the community. This day reinforces the values of kindness and compassion, essential aspects of Khmer culture. Day Three: Leung Sakk On Leung Sakk, the third day, the focus shifts to renewal and cleansing. Buddhists cleanse statues of Buddha and their elders with perfumed water, a gesture meant to wash away the past year’s misfortunes and bring luck, prosperity, and longevity. It’s also a day of joyous celebration with traditional games, music, and dance continuing into the night. #angkorsangkran #songkran #siemreap #angkorwat
