I’m Nick Hamman and I may have just found the best Chinese restaurant in South Africa, which I need to thank my new friend Akira who runs a brilliant food page called Joburg Noms for taking me to. Joining my wife and I for lunch we visited Tea and Antique in Bedfordview, run by a husband-and-wife couple who started the spot a little over a year ago before moving from Newcastle in KZN. Nini, who is self-taught, makes the pastries on offer and hosts traditional tea ceremonies, while her husband Jonsen is the chef. The menu is inspired by dishes from both of their respective hometowns, and the sense of love and tradition is unmistakable in every bite. Among the different dishes we tried out we kicked off with Beef soup dumplings, beautifully filled with beef mince, carrot, onion and a small bit of soup, dressed in homemade chili sauce We also tried the Shaanxi Noodles, named after the northwestern province which were a mix of chili and rice vinegar, giving a slightly spicy and sour kick. The ramen saw more noodles coming in a delicious broth with beef served with egg and Bok Choy And finally, the Stewed Oxtail Rice which used traditional Chinese cooking methods to get the oxtail falling off the bone, unlike anything I’ve tasted before, served together with Jasmine rice. We ended our meal off with strawberry mochi, a sweet treat that in this case was filled with real strawberries and cream. I’d highly recommend paying a visit to tea and antique, but if it’s not the best Chinese in South Africa, let me know in the comments where I’m going next. @Joburg Noms @Tea and antique #beef #ramen #noodles #chinesefood
