What’s crazy is that since the ship was so long it’s possible/likely that when the bow of the ship collided with the lake floor the stern was still above water

my great grandpa used to work on these ships. He told me when I was a kid if the ship caught between 2 waves it would snap it in half like a toothpick.

I grew up where Lake Huron turns into the St. Clair River. Ship watching never got old. I loved taking people from out of state to see just how big the freighters are. Blew minds every time

I’m surprised how long they run these old freighters. Seems like the Great Lakes industry is leary about investing in new boats incase the industry changes. That and it’s got to cost 10X to go new.

It’s just cool to see these older ships still running. Ocean freighters typically last 25-30 yrs. VS Great Lakes freighters average of 40-50 yrs, even 100! Fresh water causes less corrosion than salt
