November 9th, 1989 - the gate was reluctantly opened by severely confused border guards, following a press conference that day. Press conference spokesman Gunter Shabowski was under informed as to what he was gonna talk about, and he got to a card he was handed that read that travel restrictions would be lifted from East Germany, meaning that people could freely cross the border. He read that out loud, and he was just as confused as everyone else was. And he was asked who would apply to, and he was like, to my knowledge, it's everyone, because the card didn't say anything. Then, he was asked when the travel restrictions would be applied, he was like - Uh, immediate effect. News spread like a wildfire to the East German public, and as a result, citizens gathered by the tens of thousands at the gate in Berlin, asking border guards whether or not they'd be let through. And eventually, the border guards got tired of phoning their superiors asking for orders because nobody knew what was going on.
