Today is #WorldPsoriasisDay so I thought I would share my experience with #ScalpPsoriasis 💆🏻‍♀️ It presents itself as thick dry patches of skin on the #scalp & #hairline. These plaques are incredibly #itchy & uncomfortable. When #scratching, the dead skin flakes off to reveal sore inflammed skin. Having this condition was by far one of the most challenging things that affected my confidence. The constant intense #dandruff and itchiness made me feel so self-conscious that I wore a headscarf not only to hide my hair but also to protect the irritated skin. There’s a huge misconception that having dandruff is linked to poor hygiene. When really I was washing my hair daily, sometimes even twice and within minutes my scalp would be flaking again. My hair might have looked dirty & greasy but this was actually ointment that I would apply within my hair onto my scalp to soften the dry skin plaques & help to heal the #skinbarrier. Scalp psoriasis also caused me a lot of #hairloss especially around my hairline which #receeded a lot. I felt a complete loss of identity, my hair had always been my comfort blanket and it was stripped away & it became my biggest insecurity. It was also such a painfully exhausting & long process to try to make myself look ‘presentable’, painstakingly combing out each & every flake which just continuously multiplied as I worked the knit comb through my hair. Eventually the condition calmed down and luckily my hairline started to grow back as shown in the last picture. The hairloss really upset me at the time & I am so so grateful that I had #hairregrowth from areas that had literally lost all hair follicles until it was a shiny patch of smooth skin. I hope that this post reaches people who might have been unaware of this condition & makes people consider the mental toll it takes on those who are suffering as well as the physical effects. I had countless unkind daily messages & comments when I was documenting my scalp journey telling me to wash & that I was dirty, alongside a host of other truly awful remarks. Let’s normalise what is a very common condition and give psoriasis sufferers the support & encouragement they so desperately need 🤗 #psoriasis #psoriasisawareness #psoriasiswarrior #scalpcondition #dryscalp
