When planning this Euro tour it was a goal of mine to go to a Hanukkah service in France because it was the only city where I had a night off during Hanukkah. Hanukkah isn’t the biggest Jewish holiday but it wasn’t about the holiday, it was about deliberately seeking a Jewish community in a foreign place at a time like this, where I had to walk by torn posters of children kidnapped by Hamas, through Free Palestine rallies and past synagogue guards with massive weapons (I thanked them for being there). This simple act was less about “loving” Hanukkah and more about being deliberate in not shying away out of fear. I’m a reformed Jew and I always mention I’m Jewish to people because it’s my way of saying “I’m not afraid or ashamed.” Because we have been so taught to keep a low profile, to assimilate- and that’s all fine. But I always mention I’m Jewish as a way of showing I don’t hide. I’m allowed to be just as proud of my culture and heritage as anyone is. A service in a foreign country was important to me because visiting museums, what once were ghettos and Holocaust memorials are all about the past and about “never forget” - But a service is about life. It’s about the present and the future. And I needed that reminder. Happy Hanukkah, however you like to spell it!
