@nostalgicsound_ng: HAPPY 64TH POSTHUMOUS BIRTHDAY CHIEF DR MRS CHRISTY ESSIEN IGBOKWE MFR “The Lady of Songs” — (11 Nov. 1960 - 30 Jun. 2011) Remembering Legendary Singer & Actress Christy Essien-Igbokwe On Her Birthday Today. The Nigerian musician and actress Chief Dr. Mrs Christy Uduak Essien-Igbokwe MFR was born on November 11, 1960. In her lifetime, she was called Nigeria’s Lady of Songs. She was a polyglot and sang in Igbo, Ibibio, Efik, Hausa, Yoruba, and English. Her fluency in Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, English, and her native Ibibio gave her an appeal which crossed tribal lines. The African music legend received many national and international awards in her lifetime, in recognition of her contributions as an artist and humanitarian. Her global hit songs such as Seun Rere, Teta nu la, put Nigeria on the global music map, at the Seoul Music Festival where she emerged the Silver Prize” Winner at 6th Seoul Songs Festival, South Korea – 1983 She was the first female president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN). In 1976, she joined the cast of The New Masquerade as Akpenor, the wife of cantankerous character Jegede Sokoya (Claude Eke). Christy used her fame to highlight social issues, often donating her own royalties to health and education programs, benefiting women and children as well as the handicapped. Christy Essien-Igbokwe died on 30 June 2011 after a brief illness, at the age of 50. Happy posthumous birthday, Mama.
