Today was one of the most shocking and eye-opening days of my life. I was on my way to school when traffic ahead of me was backed up because of another wreck. As I came up the hill, I couldn’t see that traffic had stopped. When I realized it, my car wouldn’t brake fast enough because my brakes were already bad. I ended up hitting the car in front of me going around 45–50 mph. Thankfully, the other driver and her passengers are okay. I’m incredibly grateful for that. I hurt my hand and might have a broken finger, but we aren’t completely sure yet. I also have welts on my legs and soreness all over my body. Considering how bad the crash was, I know it could have been so much worse. God was definitely with me today. One small difference and things could have turned out ten times worse. The impact caused a lot of damage to my car. My airbags went off in my face and at my feet, my hood punched into my windshield and cracked it, and the bottom of my car was so bent that the tow truck had to straighten it out with a metal rod just to move it. My transmission and engine even broke in half from the impact. Seeing all that damage really put things into perspective for me. What meant the most to me, though, was seeing how fast the people I love showed up. My mom, dad, brothers, sisters, step-parents, and my boyfriend all rushed to make sure I was okay. My older brother Isaiah, who is a police officer in another county, was the first one there. Right after him, my boyfriend arrived and stayed with me the entire time, even riding with me home afterward. I’m so thankful to have someone like him by my side. My dad and stepdad came shortly after and stayed until they knew I was safe to go home. My mom couldn’t physically be there, but she stayed on the phone with me the entire time. I even told the medics I wasn’t hanging up the phone no matter what because she was on the line with me. Today reminded me how quickly life can change and how important the people around you are. I’m incredibly thankful that everyone involved is okay and that I walked away with only minor injuries. It’s definitely a day I will never forget, and one that will make me think about life a lot differently from now on. Sadly, the car is totaled, which means it’s the end of “Mr. Miyagi,” the name the person I bought it from gave it. As much as that hurts, I keep reminding myself that cars can be replaced — I can’t — and I’m just grateful that I’m okay. The hardest part about losing the car isn’t really the car itself, it’s all the memories that came with it. All the late night rides to Taco Bell with Aly and Trav, the trips out in the holler trying to get over the creek, and all the little moments in between. Those memories will always stay with me, even if the car is gone. I do wish I could restart today, though. I wish none of this had happened. In that moment, my biggest fear wasn’t even for myself — it was for the other people involved. I kept thinking about whether they were okay. Knowing that everyone is safe is what matters the most, and that’s something I’m incredibly thankful for.
