We need some more soyboys in here This January I would love it if a few more guys tried Veganuary. Men make up under a third of vegans, largely due to societal norms linking eating meat to masculinity. Even men who are vegan are much less likely to state ethical reasons due to a fear of being effeminate. The link between masculinity and meat traces back to traditional gender roles. This has deeper roots in notions of power over animals and strength. Traditional gender roles state that men would hunt animals to showcase their bravery, strength and dominance and provide for a family. Eating meat is thus a performative act. This also links to the idea of caring about animals/ the environment as being effeminate or ‘gay’, hence the term ‘soy boy’ and the increased number of female activists in vegan/ environmental groups. This is linked to broader issues around toxic masculinity whereby men feel like they can only show emotion or cry when watching football matches and can’t express empathy towards animals or people. Western beauty stands also play a role, whereby women are pressured to be slim/ slender and eat salads (the stereotype for vegans) while men strive to be big and strong and thus eat meat (incorrectly seen as the only source of protein traditionally) We still have a long way to go with most men still eating meat, but just one person turning vegan saves thousands of animal lives and has a profound positive environmental impact. To make the biggest positive impact for animals and the environment, we need as many people to become vegan as possible, and that includes mates, brothers, dads, boyfriends. We can’t just leave it to the stereotypical vegans (blue haired women). In the words of JME in the song in the background, No You Ain’t; “man don’t wanna see no dead meat on their plate like some barbarians” #veganuary #veganlife #veganlads #fyp
