Outside of form-based competition,
Outside of form-based competition, "perfect" form is sometimes a bit overrated (I define this as having an "exact" way of moving that we constantly feel like we fall short of) Form does matter, but I think about at least these 3 things: • Consistent form (AND gradual, which I should have mentioned): Many of the lifters you see with slightly different form also built up that way. Say you were bench pressing your 1RM. Suddenly, you change your elbow position a lot with the same weight and you feel like it hurt you. Was it bad form? Maybe, but it's also possible you didn't build up gradually with that movement. Not every rep has to be the same, but we should be careful when trying new forms and use lower weights and easier exercises, as a rule of thumb. Some may rephrase this as "have proper load management" - which is a related topic. • "Strong" form: while not everyone wants to lift as much as possible, a general rule is that you want form that helps you do the exercises well. Common cues here involve core bracing, proper shoulder positioning, and learning the muscle activations that help improve stability and strength (takes practice) • Intentional form: this is just doing the form you CHOOSE to do, and not the one you're FORCED into. For example, you can do squats bending slightly more at the hip or less at the hip. Neither one is really wrong, but they emphasize slightly different muscles. Over time, we should try to be intentional on what we're training to help better guide our goals. There may be other things to consider. However, I think of this whenever I see someone arguing online about "perfect" pushup or pullup form. It's an admirable goal, but ideal form usually varies and I don't find it worthwhile to pursue the small centimeters of difference - especially for something like a pushup. If we purely listen to these people, nobody has perfect form. That's what I'm thinking of when I say it's a bit overrated. Over time, you'll find suitable "good" ranges of form that work well for you. Have a wonderful day! #hybridcalisthenics
