Do you wish you were more creative? The truth is, you are!! I find that the thing that holds back creativity in most people is too much focus on the final product- anxiety around whether the finished outcome is going to be good or bad. The fear of messing up the final project often makes us even avoid trying. Most people are grading themselves on what the final piece will look like and that can be downright paralyzing to creativity. We don’t want to mess it up, so we hold back or play it safe. That is exactly what limits creativity. Sometimes the fear even keeps us from trying a new hobby or a class. What if we’re no good at it?! Even professional artists are often not willing to experiment and play and often stay only within a comfort zone and what feels “known” for them. The solution? Remove expectations. Take your paper and scribble, splash paint onto the paper, sew crazy fabrics together, take your journal and just write every thought that comes into your mind without stopping even for a moment, get polymer clay and make a little animal just you will see. Give yourself permission to be the worst one in the class- who cares! Tell yourself that you’re not going to even keep the piece, that it’s just for play- give yourself permission to go wild, to mess it up. I regularly play with clay, sculpt a silly animal just for fun, try pressing a new plant just to see if it’s possible, or experiment with color and glazes, with no set expectations of how it will turn out. The process and journey and paths taken are far more important than the finished piece (which is part of why I share videos with you rather than just a photo of the end result) In the creation of this ceramic jewelry dish, these geranium flowers and leaves are pressed into soft clay, sculpted into a jewelry dish and then fired in a pottery kiln, painted, and fired again. Here I decided to experiment with a textured rim and see how it would look with the gold accent in the finished piece. Don’t be afraid to experiment, to try something new.
