🚨 FOR 65 YEARS, AN 8-YEAR-OLD GIRL’S MURDER REMAINED UNSOLVED. NOW POLICE SAY HER KILLER WAS ONE OF THEIR OWN. And the evidence that finally exposed him had been sitting there for decades. On November 12, 1960, 8-year-old Gloria Kowalewicz left her family’s Chicago home to walk just a few blocks to church for communion. She never made it. Later that day, her little body was discovered in a wooded ravine approximately 15 miles from home. Gloria had been shot twice in the head. Her murder sparked an enormous investigation. Police interviewed more than 1,300 people, but nobody was ever charged. For more than six decades, her family lived without answers. UNTIL NOW. Chicago police say they’ve finally identified the man responsible: Thomas Francis McInerney — a former Chicago police officer who later served as a HOMICIDE DETECTIVE. McInerney was just 24 years old when Gloria was murdered, and he lived around the corner from her family. So how did investigators finally identify him? 🧬 In 2024, investigators submitted evidence for genetic genealogy testing. 🧬 In July 2026, DNA testing identified McInerney as the source of biological evidence recovered from Gloria’s clothing. 🔎 Investigators then compared fingerprints from his 1959 police department application to a fingerprint recovered from the strap of Gloria’s purse. IT WAS A MATCH. Investigators also examined ballistics evidence. And here’s the part that’s particularly disturbing. McInerney continued his career with the Chicago Police Department for 28 years, including working as a homicide detective. He later worked as an investigator for the Federal Public Defender’s Office. He died in 2006 without ever being prosecuted for Gloria’s murder. Gloria’s parents also passed away without learning who killed their daughter. Her younger brother, Adam, says he’s relieved to finally have answers, but devastated that the man investigators identified never faced justice. For 65 years, the answer was hidden in evidence investigators had collected decades earlier. A little girl was murdered. Her family spent a lifetime waiting. And the man police now identify as responsible spent much of his career investigating crimes himself. What shocks you more — that the suspected killer was a police officer, or that his own fingerprints helped solve the case decades after his death? #GloriaKowalewicz #ColdCaseSolved #TrueCrimeNews #DNAEvidence #TrueCrimeCommunity
